The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust has launched a new artificial intelligence tool that helped identify a Farncombe woman’s cancer in a matter of hours.

After Dianne Covey, 69, complained of a chronic cough, doctors reported finding something odd in her lungs.

Following the analysis of Ms. Covey’s chest X-ray by Annalise.ai, an AI tool that looks for regions of concern and notifies clinicians of those that need urgent evaluation, a diagnosis of lung cancer was confirmed.

According to Ms. Covey, “I never really understood artificial intelligence, but now I believe it could have saved my life.” I am really appreciative.

“When I went to the GP, I had a bad feeling that it was lung cancer and was really worried,” she stated.

“I feel like the speed of the diagnosis and the fact that my cancer has been caught in the early stages means that I have a second chance at life.”

Using this technique, the former hospital employee became the trust’s first patient to receive a lung cancer diagnosis. According to a hospital representative, her cancer was discovered at Stage 1, and the prognosis is favorable.

By prioritizing which X-rays to evaluate first, the AI technology helps radiographers. This replaces the former method in which the images were examined chronologically.

According to a hospital representative, the software now detects even the smallest abnormalities on scans, making these reviews more accurate.

Five trusts—Royal Surrey, Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, and East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust—are using this tool as part of the Surrey, Sussex, and Frimley Imaging Network.
