Ex-Abercrombie Chief Mike Jeffries Pleads Not Guilty to Sex Trafficking Charges

1 min read

Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and interstate prostitution charges in a New York federal court on Long Island. Appearing in a navy blue suit, Jeffries sat expressionless as his lawyers entered the plea on his behalf. Alongside him in the courtroom was his alleged middleman, James Jacobson, who also pleaded not guilty.

Jeffries’ British-American partner, Matthew Smith, who faces similar charges, is expected to appear in court at a later date. Prosecutors have accused the men of using force, fraud, and coercion to engage in “violent and exploitative” sexual acts. This case stems from an FBI investigation launched after a BBC report uncovered allegations from several men who claimed they were abused by Jeffries and Smith at events held in New York residences and international hotels.

At Friday’s hearing, Judge Steven Tiscione placed Jeffries under house arrest, restricting his movement to essential outings such as medical appointments, lawyer meetings, and religious events. Jeffries posted a $10 million bond, backed by his New York property, which required the agreement of his wife, Susan, who co-owns the house. When asked by the judge, she confirmed her understanding that the property could be foreclosed if Jeffries failed to appear in court.

Among those present was David Bradberry, an alleged victim who had previously spoken to the BBC about his experiences. After the 10-minute hearing, Jeffries left the courthouse in silence, declining to answer reporters’ questions as he entered a black SUV.
