China & India agree to work out their situation at Himalyas

1 min read

BEIJING, China — China and India have agreed to work toward resolving their long-standing border dispute in the Himalayas, following a military standoff that began with a deadly clash in 2020.

The announcement comes after the two countries reached a breakthrough in October with a pact on border patrols, ending a stalemate that had been in place since the 2020 clash in the Ladakh region. That confrontation marked the first deadly encounter between India and China since 1975, escalating tensions significantly.

In a statement following talks between China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that both sides would aim for a “fair and reasonable” resolution. The two countries will develop a roadmap, starting with easier steps and addressing more challenging issues later.

The October agreement on border patrols was soon followed by a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, their first face-to-face meeting in five years.

Wang and Doval also emphasized the importance of continuing to implement the border patrol agreement and strengthening cross-border exchanges, including the resumption of Indian pilgrim visits to Tibet, according to the Chinese statement.
