New Zealand batter Chad Bowes has made history by scoring the fastest double century in men’s List A cricket, reaching 200 runs off just 103 balls during a domestic one-day match for Canterbury against Otago Volts in the Ford Trophy at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.
Bowes surpassed the previous record, which was jointly held by Australia’s Travis Head and India’s Narayan Jagadeesan, both of whom achieved their double centuries in 114 balls. Head’s record came in 2021 while playing for South Australia against Queensland, while Jagadeesan matched it for Tamil Nadu against Arunachal Pradesh in November 2022.
Bowes was eventually dismissed for 205 runs off 110 balls, trapped lbw by Matthew Bacon. His explosive innings featured an impressive tally of seven sixes and 27 fours.
“It started off really nicely, so I just kept going and it was working, so I didn’t try to rein it in too much and just kept the foot on the gas,” Bowes said after the match. “It might sink in over the next day or two, but it was obviously a great day.”
Bowes, who has represented New Zealand in six one-day internationals and 11 T20 internationals, originally hails from South Africa, where he played for the Under-19 team before relocating to New Zealand in 2015.
In a lopsided match, Otago was all out for just 103 runs, resulting in a 240-run victory for Canterbury—the largest margin of defeat in New Zealand domestic white-ball cricket history.
List A matches include one-day internationals, 50-over tour matches, Cricket World Cup Challenge League fixtures, and premier domestic one-day games across the 12 full member nations of the International Cricket Council.
